Joseph
Paul de River was the youngest of two sons born to Paul Maurice Israel
from Lyon, France and Helen Virginia Harper of Carondolet,
Louisiana. Born at home,
November 6, 1892
, in New Orleans, de River lived most of his early life in the Garden District.
He attended French primary schools and then the public schools
where he learned to read from McGuffey Readers.

His brother, Paul Sydney,
seven years his senior, graduated from Tulane
University
Medical
School
and immediately went to work as a ship’s doctor for the United Fruit
Company. As a youth he
contacted malaria and years later, when a physician serving with the
United States Government in Fort Collins,
Colorado, he had a severe reoccurrence that nearly cost him his life.
(Apparently the altitude caused a flare-up of the symptoms.)

When he was twelve his
father enrolled him in
Marion
Military Institute, Marion
,
Alabama. The idea was to teach him
discipline and leadership and remove him from the influences of the
gangs and unpleasant elements in New Orleans. Approximately a year later
his father brought a homesick son home.
